Welcome to Carnoustie's Dalhousie Golf Club

Dalhousie Golfers and the Links, Circa 1896

David Joy, known all over the world for his promotion of golf and its history, and in particular for his reincarnation of Old Tom Morris, honoured us as guest speaker at our 140th anniversary dinner and presentation of trophies.  David generously presented to the club copies of these pictures from an 1896 book on the top courses - possibly the world's first "coffee table book" on golf.  The book gives the Dalhousie Club a tremendous write-up and pictures our historic old clubhouse, sadly now gone, and some of the leading members back in 1896.  We are most grateful to David. (Editor's footnote:- For the benefit of the curious web browsers, the "line-up" in front of the clubhouse includes twelve golfers and twelve caddies. The couple putting out includes the Club Secretary, Mr. Gray, while the wider view is reckoned by the photographer to illustrate the 18th green of the course at that time. Arguments to the contrary will, of course, be sympathetically considered!)

Greetings from Dalhousie U.S.A.!

The club has been delighted to receive this magnificent greeting from the Dalhousie Golf Club in Missouri, USA, to mark our 140th anniversary celebration. We have established friendly links with the Young Dalhousie Club and already have one joint member with them, Dr Jay Sheets. We are most grateful to Cord Dombrowski, founder and managing member of the Missouri club, and all of its members, for this splendid gesture.  We look forward to many years of close ties with our American namesakes.

A gem from one of Carnoustie's illustrious line of visiting historical celebrities.......

NEVER IN THE FIELD OFGOLFING CONFLICT........
The following extract from a Dundee newspaper is a description of a certain golfer playing at Carnoustie.
"Mr............. has taken some pains to learn how to hit the ball, and very often gets a long stroke both from the tee and through the green, but he has yet a lot to learn which a professional teacher could in two or three lessons enable him to do.  For enthusiasm he has few equals... Impatient always...he follows up his ball at a fast pace which is all right from the point of view of getting the exercise which he is after, but is all wrong when there are other players in front."
Sounds familiar?  Recognise the player?  In fact the golfer concerned was Winston Churchill who, during the 1910 General Election campaign in Dundee (which he represented in Parliament for 14 years) , played golf at Carnoustie every day, including polling day.
Churchill's regular visits to Carnoustie were as the guest of James Falconer, the Liberal MP for Forfarshire, who may well have been a member of the Dalhousie Club.
When in London, Churchill frequently played at Walton Heath, where he was a member (along with Lloyd George) and where James Braid was the professional. This means another coincidental link with Carnoustie, as Colin Sinclair, the Carnoustie Golf Hotel pro and honorary professional of the Dalhousie Club, was formerly senior assistant at Walton Heath - although a few years after Churchill's and Braid's era!
Colin wishes to point out that he does NOT agree with Churchill's most famous comment on the game which gives us so much angst as well as pleasure.  "Golf," said the great man, "is an ineffectual attempt to direct an uncontrollable sphere into an inaccessible hole with implements ill-adapted to the purpose."
Now if only he could have been fitted out with the latest Callaways.......

Visitors from Dalhousie, U.S.A.

Our club captain had the pleasure of meeting and entertaining two members of the Dalhousie Golf Club, Cape Girardeau, Missouri, USA, on May 30.  Dr Jay Sheets and his 17-year-old son Jordan  both enjoyed the challenge of the Championship Course and also were keen to learn about the history of our club and to inspect (and photograph) some of our club treasures.
The American club, founded in 2002, is built on land which was settled by the sister of the then Earl of Dalhousie in the late 1700s - and so we share not just the Dalhousie name but also the proud connection with the Ramsays, the family name of the Earls of Dalhousie.
We hope the visit of Jay and Jordan will be the first of many connections with our American namesakes - and, who knows? Dalhousie members might, one day, take America by storm!
There is a direct link from this site to the website of the Missouri club which is well worth exploring.............
