The tradition of clubmaking was allied to that of "course superintendent" in the early days of golf in the town. Bob Simpson, who came to Carnoustie in 1883, built his first workshop/retail outlet in the corner of the Dalhousie grounds. This picture of it (Dalhousie to the rear and eager apprentice clubmakers gathered outside) dates from approximately 1898.
