The Championship Course was bathed in magnificent sunshine on July 21st as the Seniors' match between Dalhousie and Edzell was staged. The noticeable improvement this season in the form of the Dalhousie members was emphasised in a resounding victory by five matches to two. In a gracious and humble post-match speech, the Edzell captain, Harry Barnett, was quick to concede that the better team undoubtedly won, although his suggestion that his own performance ( and that of his partner ) had been affected by something slipped into their juice and Kit Kats after the customary halt at the refreshment kiosk was vigorously refuted by their triumphant opponents, Graeme Paton and Donald Ford. Excellent wins were also recorded by Gordon Adam and Frank Swan, Lindsay Hood and John McDougall, Norman ("I left my blazer in the living room") Howie and Bob Wilson - and finally George Henderson and Dennis Young.
Aside from some excellent golf, highlights of the afternoon included an unplanned, sixty-yard dash by the remote-controlled caddy car of one Edzell Senior, which ultimately tipped itself into a bunker.....but of course their Dalhousie opponents, true to form and in the spirit of the game, did not insist on ANY penalty being enforced! Four Japanese golfers, ahead of the first match, had many traumatic moments and at various stages play was held up; one bonus arising, however, is that Graeme Paton now has a collection of several new expressions of disgust ( in Japanese ) to supply any interested member. The group's teeshots, in particular, were regularly observed to fly high, wide and handsome all over the course..............
The return match lies ahead at Edzell on August 25th; Dalhousie Seniors should beware the injured foe!
