Thornton Trophy Final

September 27, 2017 15:29 by Gordon

The splendid format of the Thornton Trophy (Dalhousie’s own, annual, inter-club tournament) produced exciting moments in the final matches on the Championship Course.  The Carnoustie Club looked to be coasting to victory over New Taymouth after establishing a nine holes to one lead, with just the last four ball out on the course. The New Taymouth final pair, however - just one hole up at the turn – started a remarkable inward half blitz and, with just two holes to play, had created a SIX hole advantage over their opponents. The last Carnoustie pairing simply gritted their teeth and managed to prevent further damage over the seventeenth and eighteenth holes, to allow Carnoustie to scrape home by nine holes to seven. It was a fitting victory in the Club’s 175th year of celebration, but there were more than a few jangling nerves in the clubhouse during that last half-hour of golf.

Dalhousie, meanwhile, enjoyed a handsome victory over Caledonia, with notable performances by Angus Hay, Ryan Watson, Dave Ashford and Joe Duncan instrumental in a win by no fewer than fifteen holes which, crucially, avoided the ignominy of the wooden spoon appearing in the DGC trophy cabinet after this year’s tournament!
